Abstract

This study discussed how interpersonal communication strategies are used by Japanese Generation Z in maintaining politeness values in the digital era. This study used qualitative approach, with interview and observation as the methods. It was found that the interpersonal communication strategies used by Japanese Generation Z that were applied contextually, aligned with Brown and Levinson's Politeness Theory (1978). Which can be seen through how they adjust the use of implicit, explicit, verbal and nonverbal language to the present social context. With the strategy of "understanding", "choosing", and "acting". As well as the cultural dynamic transformation in the aisatsu culture (greetings) in Japanese Generation Z. In addition, the differences in attitude and communication strategies that were used by two Japanese Generations were also found in this study. There are also forms of communication that are usually carried out by both generations, which is: careful speech, openness, and a non-phubbing attitude. This study also found the differences of motivation for politeness norms implement in Generation Z and the senior generation of Japan. Which was how the Japanese Generation Z tend to use politeness values as a step to build their own image, meanwhile the senior generation of Japan view it as a cultural heritage that must be maintained. Through these differences, there is a shift of values in the application of intergenerational communication in Japan. Therefore, researcher hopes that further study can be done to explore the factors of the shift in these values in a more depth and more comparatively through cross-generations and cross- cultures.
