Abstract

Principal plays a crucial role in achieving high-quality education. Their leadership role influences various aspects of school operations which in turn impacts students’ skill development. One of the student skills that principals need to develop is literacy skills. Literacy is crucial because it forms the foundation of the teaching and learning process. During the four-year tenure of the principal at SMP Kristen X Jambi, there is a significant increase in literacy skills based on educational report. Therefore, this qualitative research, utilizing a case study approach, aims to: 1) understand the instructional leadership strategies that is implemented by the principal in efforts to improve students' literacy skills, 2) understand the leadership approach that is put into practice by the principal in enhancing students' literacy skills, and 3) understand the supporting and hindering factors in principal's leadership in improving students' literacy skills. The research findings indicate that the principal plays a significant role in developing students' literacy skills by implementing instructional leadership and adopting transformational approaches. In her leadership, there were both supporting and hindering factors in developing student literacy. / Kepala sekolah memiliki peran penting untuk mencapai mutu pendidikan yang tinggi. Hal ini dikarenakan perannya memengaruhi berbagai aspek di sekolah yang berdampak pada perkembangan kemampuan murid. Salah satu kemampuan murid yang perlu dikembangkan oleh kepala sekolah adalah kemampuan literasi. Hal ini dikarenakan literasi adalah dasar utama dalam proses belajar dan mengajar. Dalam masa kepemimpinan kepala sekolah SMP Kristen X Jambi selama empat tahun, terjadi peningkatan kemampuan literasi berdasarkan Rapor Pendidikan. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif dan dengan pendekatan studi kasus bertujuan untuk 1) memahami strategi kepemimpinan instruksional yang diterapkan oleh kepala sekolah dalam upaya meningkatkan kemampuan literasi murid, 2) memahami pendekatan kepemimpinan kepala sekolah dalam meningkatkan kemampuan literasi murid, dan 3) memahami faktor-faktor pendukung dan penghambat kepemimpinan kepala sekolah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan literasi murid. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kepala sekolah berperan signifikan dalam mengembangkan kemampuan literasi murid dengan menjalankan kepemimpinan instruksional dan melakukan pendekatan transformasional. Dalam kepemimpinannya, ada faktor-faktor yang mendukung dan menghambat kepala sekolah untuk mengembangkan literasi murid.
