Abstract
menggali pengalaman simbolik anggota komunitas melalui wawancara
proses pembentukan makna kolektif.
The growth of informal digital communities on social media has fostered new
forms of symbol-based social bonding. The @Ecommurz community
exemplifies how distinctive symbols and language function not only
as communication tools but also as instruments in shaping collective identity.
This study focuses on the strategic use of symbols within digital communities to
generate both social cohesion and social exclusion — a perspective that
distinguishes it from previous research, which often emphasized participation or
online activism. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method,
this study explores the symbolic experiences of community members through indepth interviews with five active informants and observations of social media
content shared within the community. The data were analyzed based on
key concepts from Symbolic Convergence Theory (SCT), such as fantasy
theme, symbolic cue, and rhetorical vision, to understand the collective
meaning-making process. The findings reveal that symbols in the @Ecommurz
community serve a dual function: they foster solidarity among members while
simultaneously acting as symbolic boundaries that exclude outsiders. Cohesion
is maintained through the repeated sharing of collective narratives,
whereas invisible mechanisms of social exclusion subtly emerge. The study
concludes that symbols play a strategic role in managing the social dynamics
of informal digital communities and serve as key indicators of integration and
differentiation within online interactions.
