Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the K-pop fandom community responds to the South Korean President’s cultural policies through the Twitter platform, using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis approach. As an active and organized social group, K-pop fandoms are not merely cultural consumers but also political-cultural actors capable of mobilizing public opinion in the digital sphere. In the context of President Yoon Suk-yeol’s cultural policies—which have sparked both support and opposition the fandom community demonstrates complex, reflective, and symbolically rich communication patterns. The data in this study were gathered from viral tweets representing K-pop fandom responses to political issues and cultural policies in South Korea, particularly those related to national identity, cultural censorship, and freedom of expression. The analysis traces three main dimensions of Fairclough’s framework: textual (linguistic features), discursive practice (message production and consumption), and social practice (underlying power structures and ideologies). The findings reveal that K-pop fandoms produce subtle yet powerful resistance discourses through popular symbols such as songs, light sticks, and artist quotes, while also repositioning digital spaces as alternative political arenas that reframe the relationship between the state, citizens, and popular culture. This study underscores that contemporary political communication is inseparable from the dynamics of popular culture and the active role of digital communities as producers of meaning.
