Abstract
The lack of student engagement, learning independence, and conceptual understanding in science learning among seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Tangerang presents a significant challenge in creating meaningful learning experiences. These three aspects are essential components of a student-centered learning process. However, the lecture method, which is still commonly used in schools, is considered less effective in developing these competencies optimally. Therefore, a more interactive learning model that encourages active student participation, such as the flipped classroom model, is needed. This study aims to examine the differences in student engagement, learning independence, and conceptual understanding between students taught using the flipped classroom model and those taught using the lecture method. The study employed an experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design, involving 71 seventh- grade students divided into control and experimental classes. The instruments used were assessment rubrics and test items. The analysis results showed that the average scores of student engagement, learning independence, and conceptual understanding in the experimental class were higher than those in the control class. The average n-gain in the experimental class for the three variables fell into the medium category (0.66; 0.46; 0.45), while the control class fell into the low category (0.11; 0.11; 0.22). It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the flipped classroom model and the lecture method in improving student engagement, learning independence, and conceptual understanding. / Kurangnya keterlibatan siswa, kemandirian belajar, dan penguasaan konsep dalam pembelajaran IPA kelas VII di SMPN 2 Tangerang menjadi tantangan dalam menciptakan pembelajaran yang bermakna. Ketiga aspek tersebut merupakan komponen penting dalam proses belajar yang berpusat pada siswa. Namun, metode ceramah yang masih digunakan di sekolah dinilai belum mampu mengembangkan kemampuan tersebut secara optimal. Untuk itu, dibutuhkan model pembelajaran yang lebih interaktif dan mendorong partisipasi aktif siswa, seperti model flipped classroom. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan keterlibatan siswa, kemandirian belajar, dan penguasaan konsep antara siswa yang menggunakan model flipped classroom dan metode ceramah. Penelitian menggunakan metode eksperimen dengan desain Nonequivalent Control Group Design dan melibatkan 71 siswa kelas VII yang terbagi dalam kelas kontrol dan eksperimen. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah rubrik dan soal tes. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata nilai keterlibatan siswa, kemandirian belajar, dan penguasaan konsep pada kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dibandingkan kelas kontrol. Rata- rata n-gain pada kelas eksperimen untuk ketiga variabel berada pada kategori sedang (0,66; 0,46; 0,45), sedangkan pada kelas kontrol berada pada kategori rendah (0,11; 0,11; 0,22). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara kelas yang menggunakan model pembelajaran flipped classroom dan kelas yang menggunakan metode ceramah terhadap keterlibatan siswa, kemandirian belajar, dan penguasaan konsep.
