Abstract

This study adopts Hans Kohn’s theory, which differentiates between civic nationalism (nation-state) and ethnic nationalism (culture-state), to examine the students perceptions of nationalism within the joint cooperation school (Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama) context. The forces of globalization and the “shrinking world” phenomenon have weakened rigid territorial boundaries and challenged conventional understandings of identity. The study includes perspectives from both Indonesian and non-Indonesian students; employs a mixed- method approach, combining quantitative survey data with qualitative insights gathered through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and in-depth interviews. The findings have indicated that the Indonesian students generally exhibit a stronger inclination toward civic nationalism, while the non-Indonesian students tend to align more closely with ethnic nationalism. These findings have suggested that, while curriculum design is important, the students’ national identity is also shaped by factors, such as languages, cultural affiliations, and family backgrounds.
