Abstract

This study aims to explore how the communication practices of buzzers, coordinators, and vendors are strategically carried out within Indonesia's digital space. The buzzer phenomenon has become increasingly prominent alongside the rise of social media as a key arena for shaping public opinion, political campaigning, and digital marketing. Using a qualitative approach grounded in interpretivism, the research investigates work practices that are not only technical, but also emotional, strategic, and ethically complex. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four informants directly involved as buzzer coordinators, buzzers, and vendors. Thematic analysis was employed to uncover patterns of work, power dynamics, and communication strategies shaped by client demands. The study draws on three key theoretical frameworks: Merlyna Lim’s concept of the networked public sphere, Christian Fuchs’ theory of digital capitalism, and Hallahan et al.’s strategic communication theory. Findings reveal that buzzer practices operate systematically yet covertly, constructing narratives and shaping public perception in ways designed to appear organic. Buzzers are not merely paid actors but are embedded within a complex communication system influenced by market logic, platform algorithms, and political agendas. This research contributes to digital communication studies by revealing hidden practices behind the scenes of social media. / Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami secara mendalam bagaimana praktik komunikasi para buzzer, koordinator, dan vendor dijalankan secara strategis dalam ruang digital di Indonesia. Fenomena buzzer semakin menonjol seiring meningkatnya penggunaan media sosial sebagai arena pembentukan opini publik di berbagai aspek. Melalui pendekatan kualitatif dengan landasan interpretatif, penelitian ini menelusuri praktik kerja yang tidak hanya bersifat teknis, tetapi juga emosional, strategis dan penuh pertimbangan etis. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam terhadap empat informan yang memiliki pengalaman langsung sebagai koordinator buzzer, buzzer, dan vendor. Analisis dilakukan menggunakan teknik analisis tematik untuk mengungkap pola kerja, relasi kuasa, serta strategi komunikasi yang disusun berdasarkan kebutuhan klien. Penelitian ini berlandaskan pada tiga teori utama: konsep media baru dan ruang publik jaringan dari Merlyna Lim, kapitalisme digital dari Christian Fuchs, dan teori komunikasi strategis dari Hallahan dkk. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa praktik buzzer dijalankan secara sistematis namun tersembunyi, di mana narasi dan persepsi publik dibentuk agar tampak organik. Buzzer tidak sekadar aktor bayaran, melainkan bagian dari sistem komunikasi digital yang kompleks dan sarat kepentingan. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi terhadap kajian komunikasi digital di Indonesia, khususnya dalam memahami praktik tersembunyi di balik layar media sosial.
