Abstract

Interfaith Dialogue since the tragedy of 9/11 has been emerging as a significant issue in the international relations. Interfaith dialogue, which is empowering religion issue, plays the important role not only in the domestic level but also in the bilateral, regional, multilateral, and global level. It is considered as the tool to achieve the world peace.It also seen as the upstanding and effective culture of dialogue to overcome the conflicts and differences, then create the cooperation in any aspects based on mutual understanding and respect among nations. Therefore, as the ‘intermestic’ issue, interfaith dialogue is needed in the domestic and international level as the bridge of dialogue for internal and global situation. Indonesia as the multiethnic state with acquisition of new identities since the new order’s regime has become democracy state, most of the population is moderate Muslim supports, and shared the international norms to prevent intolerance especially in religion issue by the effort to promote the interfaith dialogue. In facts, Indonesia known by international society as the pioneer and main actor of state that really support the continuing of interfaith dialogue. Based on its identities and national interests, ranging from 2004-2012 Indonesia has conducted action to promote and prioritize interfaith dialogue on its foreign policy and national agenda. Therefore the purposes of this research are to describe the foreign policy of Indonesia in promoting the interfaith dialogue along with the implementation of its foreign policy. From the data and analysis it is found that in practice, Indonesia through its foreign policy implementation has participated and emerged interfaith dialogues with its state-partners in bilateral up to global level. Thus, interfaith dialogue has become on of the soft power for Indonesia in the international world. It causes Indonesia’s government totally take efforts and focus on promoting interfaith dialogue through its foreign policy. There are notable purposes and impacts of the foreign policy in the implementation of interfaith dialogue. For instances, through Directorate of Diplomacy and Public, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Indonesia, interfaith dialogue could be applied to enhance the positive image of Indonesia both in the domestic and international world.
