Abstract
Pada zaman modern ini, istilah ‘budaya populer’ bukanlah hal yang asing lagi di kalangan masyarakat umum dan bahkan konsumsi budaya populer sehari-harinya telah menjadi sebuah trend tersendiri bagi masyarakat di zaman modern. Walaupun bagi masyarakat luas budaya populer hanya dianggap sebagai salah satu jenis entertainment semata saja, bagi pemerintahan sebuah negara, budaya populer dilihat sebagai sebuah instrumen alat diplomasi publik yang dapat membantu meningkatkan soft power negaranya. Contoh penggunaan budaya populer sebagai alat diplomasi publik pun dapat dilihat pada kedua negara berikut yakni Jepang dan Korea Selatan. Fenomena budaya populer dari Jepang dan Korea Selatan ini pun sekarang dikenal oleh masyarakat internasional dengan nama Cool Japan dan Korean Wave. Dengan meningkatnya soft power yang dimilikinya, kedua negara pun berharap bahwa pembentukan imej nasional negaranya di dalam politik internasional menjadi lebih mudah tercapai. Tesis ini pun bertujuan untuk melihat baik dari segi alasan maupun tujuan, serta bagaimana cara kedua negara menggunakan budaya populer sebagai alat diplomasi publik. Dengan membandingkan bagaimana strategi kedua negara dalam menggunakan budaya populer sebagai alat diplomasi publik maka dapat dilihat seberapa besar peran budaya populer dalam membantu pembentukan citra nasional sebuah negara. / In this modern age, the term 'popular culture' is not a foreign thing anymore to the general public and even the consumption of popular culture itself has become a trend for people in the modern age. Although for the general populace popular culture is only considered as one form of many entertainment, for a government, popular culture is seen as a instrument of public diplomacy that can help improve their country soft power. Examples of the use of popular culture as a tool of public diplomacy can be seen in the following two countries namely Japan and South Korea. The popular culture phenomenon from Japan and South Korea are now known as Cool Japan and Korean Wave. With the increase of their soft power, both countries are hoping that the shaping of their national image in international politics are achieved more easily. This thesis therefore aim to see both in terms and objective, also how these two countries use their pop culture as public diplomacy tool. By comparing how the two countries strategy in using their pop culture as public diplomacy tool, it can be can be seen how big is pop culture role in helping establish a nation’s national image
