Abstract
Initiated under Bush’s administration, Dominican Republic–Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) is a tripartite agreement between United States, Dominican Republic, and Central American which come to force in 2006. Central American is considered as one entity of political economy union consists of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica – whose have similar profile, bounded together by dependency on United States. United States is considered as main trade partner as well as primary source of foreign investment for these countries, therefore DR- CAFTA serve a significant role in enhancing Central American political economy well being. This present study explicates DR-CAFTA implications on Central American’s economy political situation – as nations and region, under the perspective of liberalism. Information sources vary among academic journals, government reports, media publications, politician’s commentaries, thesis, and dissertation. Data gathered will then be arranged using qualitative-descriptive analysis method. Discussion embodies three major parts of analysis. First, examination of United States and Central America interests; followed by countries’ economy and political context prior to DR-CAFTA. Second, description on DR-CAFTA impacts on the region. Finally the effect perceived by El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica are elaborated. This research found that DR-CAFTA has yet brought positive output in macro-economy scale and drive political stability in the region and countries.
