Abstract
Pop Culture is ever so popular with each day and has penetrated the Indonesian youth trend. One of this pop culture is the trend of Cosplay. Cosplay derived from the from “Costume” and “Play”, it is an activity of transforming one- self into a fictional character by wearing their costume and adopting their identity. It is an act of performance that consisting of presenting one –self with different identity.
This research aims to analyze how individual perceive self and transform their individual identity to imaginative identity during cosplay, as well as how they do identity negotiation during cosplay. In order for cosplay to be whole, cosplayers create a collective fictional world when are cosplaying. The researcher believed that during this process where they interact and communicate with fellow cosplayers and audience, a factor would arise where it influenced and shaped their identity. This research used qualitative approach with grounded theory method. Data collection is done through in-depth interview and field observation as the primary data, while literature and document study as secondary data. From this research, it is found that cosplay significantly shaped cosplayer’s identity and it relates to gradation of identity as proof of identity negotiation process. The result also shows that cosplay made cosplayer communication and social skills improved. / Pop Kultur semakin populer semakin harinya dan telah memasuk trend anak muda Indonesia. Salah satu trend pop kultur ini adalah Cosplay. Cosplay berasal dari kata “Costume” dan “Play”, yang merupakan sebuah aktivitas dimana seseorang berubah menjadi karakter fiksi dengan memakai pakaian mereka dan mengadopsi perilaku mereka. Cosplay merupakan sebuah performa yang terdiri dari mempresentasikan diri dengan identitas lain. Penelitian ini tertujuan untuk menganalisa bagaimana individu mempersepsikan diri cosplayer dan mengubah identitas individu mereka menjadi identitas imajinatif selama cosplay, serta bagaimana mereka melakukan negosiasi identitas selama cosplay. Agar cosplay menjadi utuh, cosplayers membentuk dunia fiktif secara kolektif ketika mereka ber-cosplay. Peneliti percaya bahwa saat cosplayer berinteraksi dan berkomunikasi dengan sesama cosplayer dan hadirin, akan muncul faktor yang dimana itu akan mempengaruhi dan membentuk identitas mereka. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode grounded theory. Pengumpulan data primer dilakukan dengan wawancara mendalam dan observasi lapangan, sedangkan pengumpulan data sekunder dilakukan dengan tinjauan pustaka dan studi dokumen terkait. Dari penelitian ini, ditemukan bahwa cosplay secara signifikan membentuk identitas cosplayer dan bagaimana itu berhubungan dengan gradasi identitas sebagai bukti negosiasi identitas. Hasil yang didapat menunjukan bahwa cosplay membuat kemanpuan berkomunikasi dan bersosial cosplayer lebih baik.
