Abstract
Since the 1960s to the 1990s, the economy of the 23 East Asia countries grew faster than countries in other regions of the world. From the East Asia countries, South Korea is one of those countries that has a high economic growth. Earlier, in 1950, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. But in the early 1960's, South Korea made economic reforms by adopting a strategy of export orientation in the trade, under the rule of Park Chung Hee. Then in early 1997, South Korea re-experienced an economic crisis, and followed by Asian economic crisis. To rise from the bankruptcy, South Korea embarked on efforts, such as developing the industrial sector through FDI inflows, joining regionalism cooperations (such as APEC, ASEAN +3, ARF), introducing the culture, etc. Those efforts are none other than the instruments of soft power that used by South Korea to achieve their national interests. Now, culture and FDI outflows of South Korea also playing an active role in efforts to fulfill their national interest. This research used qualitative methods, which data that is used in sentences as well as the descriptions and this research has descriptive characteristic, that is research that seeks to tell the existing solutions based on the data. Sources of the research data obtained through primary data sources, such as interviews, as well as secondary data, obtained from the research of the others. From the research that has been done, can be explored about the history of South Korea's economic revival, that gained through a long process; South Korea's relations with countries in the Asia Pacific region affected by regionalism cooperations and through these regionalism cooperations, South Korea also increased their influence through their soft power. The role of soft power is also very important to achieve the national interest of South Korea and to do the balance of power, especially with countries in the Asia Pacific region.
