Abstract

Background: According to UNAIDS data, an estimated 33 million people in the world are infected with HIV. If these people are not properly treated, the majority will die. Compliance is vital for effective antiretroviral treatment. In 2013, there are 35 million people living with HIV covering 16 million women and 1.2 million children <15 years of age. The number of new HIV infections in 2013 amounted to 2.1 million consisting of 1.9 million adults and 240,000 children <15 years of age. The number of AIDS deaths are 1.5 million which consists of 1.3 million adults and 190.000 children aged <15 years. Access to antiretroviral drugs, however, is not the only solution. The key component to success in antiretroviral therapy (ART) is how well infected people adhere to this complex treatment regimen, because poor adherence negatively affects individuals and communities. Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the key to continued HIV suppression by reducing the risk of drug resistance, improving health, quality of life, and overall survival, as well as reducing the risk of HIV transmission. From a patient perspective, disobedience is often a consequence of one or more behavioral, structural, and psychosocial barriers, such as depression and other mental illnesses, neuro cognitive impairment, low health literacy, low levels of social support, stressful life events, high levels of alcohol consumption and the use of active substances, homelessness, poverty, rejection, stigma, inconsistent drug access, and of course beliefs in the effectiveness of the treatment itself. Aim: To find out whether it is true that the patient's beliefs factor in medication effectiveness is influential to adherence of antiretroviral therapy. Material and Methods: This study will be conducted by cross-sectional method with a sample of HIV / AIDS patients undergoing ART treatment for at least 2viii weeks and aged between 18-65 years from a hospital located in the Tangerang area. The sample size is calculated by the unpaired categorical comparative analytic formula. Samples will be selected non-randomly with a consecutive sampling technique. Medication beliefs will be assessed using modified BMQ (Beliefs about Medicine Questionnaire). Adherence to ART (Anti Retroviral Therapy) will be assessed by DAI 10 (Drug Attitude Inventory) questionnaire to assess treatment adherence rate.Tabulation data will be done using Microsoft Excel program and data analysis will be done by using SPSS version 21 to know which relationship between variables studied. The nominal data will be translated using the mean / median and standard deviation layout. The resulting data will be processed using the Chi Square hypothesis test in accordance with the analytic study of unpaired comparative categorical. Significant variable then will be analyzed multivariately using logistic regression. Result: The data analysis by chi square showed there are 95,5% patients who are adhere in taking ART, yet 4,5% patients are not adhere and the association between them is not significant (p=0,057). Conclusion: There is no significant association between medication beliefs and adherence to anti retroviral therapy in HIV/AIDS patients at Siloam Karawaci hospital. For further research, analysis of other factors that can affect the attention level is needed.
