Abstract
Previous study had shown that Indian Borage leaves have antimicrobial compound such as phenolic, flavonoid, tannin, saponin and steroid. The purpose of this research was to know the inhibition activity of ethanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane extract of indian borage leaves towards pathogenic bacteria such as S. Thypi, E.coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus and L. monocytogenes through well diffusion method. Extract concentration used are 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. The results showed that the Indian Borage extract was able to inhibit the growth of P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and L. monocytogenes, however could not inhibit the growth of E.coli and S. Thypi. The Ethanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane extract of indian borage leaves with chosen concentration 5% was proceeded to the stability test toward salt, sugar, pH and heat. In addition, toxicity test was also performed to the selected indian borage extract. The indian borage leaves extract was stable towards concentration of 1%-5% salt, 10%-50% sugar, and pH 5-6. At 100°C 15 minutes of heating, indian borage extract still shown the antibacterial activity. The results of toxicity test stated that the ethanol indian borage leaves extract is non toxic, however the ethyl acetate and hexane extract of indian borage leaves extract are categorized toxic.
