Abstract

Medical students learn to attend to the quality of life of patients during the course of their education. However, their own quality of life may decrease in medical school. Few studies found significant difference of quality of life between preclinical and clinical students, others found otherwise as there was improvement in medical education curriculum. The aim of this study was to access the quality of life of medical students in preclinical and clinical education, and to explore their influencing factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted in February and March 2018. The study population was composed of 389 medical students in preclinical and clinical education at Pelita Harapan University. WHOQOL-BREF instrument was used to assess the quality of life of preclinical and clinical students. Results were analyzed by SPSS 22 using Mann – Whitney U and Kruskal – Wallis. Based on the statistical review, preclinical students have better quality of life in physical, psychological and environment domains than clinical students. The result shows a significant decrease in quality of life during the transition phase from preclinic to clinic. Moreover, result shows significant relationship between better quality of life and students who have parent working as doctor, also that longer sleep duration and routine exercise 2 to 3 times per week increase the quality of life. This study shows significant difference of quality of life on preclinical and clinical students, particularly during the year of transition phase from preclinic to clinic / Sepanjang pendidikan kedokteran, mahasiswa belajar memahami kualitas hidup pasien, akan tetapi kualitas hidup mahasiswa sendiri dapat menurun pada pendidikan kedokteran.
