The recent phenomenon called Arab Spring has brought many revolutions around the Middle East and North Africa region. Libya was one of the countries whose citizens went rebel against Muammar Gaddafi’s authoritarian government fighting for democracy. During the hostile transition, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) decided to get involve in humanitarian intervention for the sake of human rights and democracy. This raises debates from many aspects, such as legal, ethical, and ideological point of views. Even after the civil war ended, symbolized by the death of Gaddafi, Libya’s sovereignty is still at stake. The purposes of this research is to explain how NATO’s humanitarian intervention took place, to elaborate the arguments both for and against the humanitarian intervention in Libya, and to describe the implication of NATO’s involvement towards Libya’s current sovereignty status in the international society. All of the data is obtained from literature review, interview, and content analysis. The research method used in this thesis is qualitative, descriptive, and comparative approach. NATO’s humanitarian intervention in Libya had several flaws (from the decision making process until the execution phase) that could be questioned and criticized upon. Yet, it does not necessarily make NATO’s humanitarian intervention is unneeded and unlawful to conduct. Its flaws should not become the reasons to ban any humanitarian intervention in the future. But surely the international society, particularly NATO’s member states and other countries who supported the intervention, still have to take responsibilities even after the civil war has ended.
