Abstract
The substitution of the coarse types of aggregate (gravel) with a lightweight component has been one of the most popular approach for the production of a lightweight concrete. This research utilizes lightweight expanded clay aggregate as the substitute material of natural coarse aggregate. Where the effect to the performance of concrete is observed herein by means of compressive strength as the key parameter of quality of concrete. To achieve the expected compressive strength value, the lightweight expanded clay aggregate used is soaked in water for 24 hours before being mixed that is known as internal curing and using a superplasticizer during mixing. The quality of lightweight concrete is also tested by ultrasonic pulse velocity to obtain comprehensive data on the positive effects of lightweight expanded clay aggregate, which will be correlated with the results of compressive strength test conducted in the laboratory. The target of compressive strength of this lightweight concrete is 20 MPa, equivalent to K-200 in 28 days with specific gravity below 1750 kg/m3. The highest compressive strength obtained in 28 days is 20.36 MPa with density 1666 kg/m3. In addition, using white portland cement, add accelerator and partial substitution chopped plastics to achieve the expected initial compressive strength that is 17MPa, equivalent to K-170 in 3 days. The highest initial compressive strength obtained in 3 days is 18.45 MPa.
