Abstract
Indonesian textile industry has a recent rapid development, which causes environmental waste accumulation. Most textile waste are colored liquid effluents with toxic compound content, that would cause toxicity responses on living organisms, namely triphenylmethanes such as malachite green, and azo dyes such as trypan blue. Heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons are also common toxic constituents in textile wastes. Toxic compounds in textile waste might pose a threat to the quality of Indonesian agroecosystems. Oryza sativa (rice) is a commodity crop in Indonesia, and its exposure to textile dyes during planting process could affect its yield. Beneficial soil bacteria are also in a risk of toxic textile waste exposure that would cause imbalance in an agroecosystem. In this research, commercially sold local textile dye toxicities on rice and Bacillus subtilis were investigated. Results indicated that commercial textile dyes affected early rice growth, while no growth inhibition on Bacillus subtilis was observed, showing direct negative impact on rice agrosystems from textile waste. Studies on the decolorization activites of Department of Biology Universitas Pelita Harapan bacterial isolates showed that isolate MB2 exhibited decolorization activity on a commercial dye used in this research. This finding encourages further research regarding the use of bacteria as a potent bioremediation agent.
