Abstract

Kemajuan industri gula sempat mengantarkan Indonesia menjadi eksportir gula terbesar kedua di dunia. Ketika Indonesia merdeka, industri gula mulai mengalami penurunan dan mengakibatkan sebagian besar pabrik gula di Jawa berhenti beroperasi. Hal ini diakibatkan oleh mulai adanya teknologi baru yang lebih efisien, serta kurangnya intervensi langsung dari pemerintah. Sebagian besar pabrik yang tersisa telah ditinggalkan dan kini hanya menjadi pabrik kosong, bahkan beberapa diantaranya sudah tidak ada. Pabrik Gula Jatibarang yang terletak tepat di pusat kota Jatibarang merupakan sebuah pabrik yang memiliki sejarah yang panjang serta memiliki sebuah peninggalan arsitektur dalam wujud sebuah stasiun lokomotif roundhouse, dimana hanya terdapat dua di Indonesia. Sebagai kota kecil penghasil gula pada masa lampau, kota Jatibarang memiliki berbagai tradisi yang dipengaruhi oleh produksi gula. Dalam penulisan penelitian dan perancangan ini, penulis bertujuan untuk meneliti bagaimana sebuah kawasan pabrik dapat direvitalisasi menjadi sebuah warisan yang dapat mengakomodasi aktivitas publik dalam masyarakat dan sebagai objek turisme. Pabrik Gula Jatibarang dapat dikategorikan sebagai sebuah industrial heritage, sehingga identifikasi elemen yang bernilai dapat dilakukan dengan menilai aset-aset yang dimilikinya./The progress of the sugar industry had led Indonesia to become the second largest sugar exporter in the world. When Indonesia gained its independence, the sugar industry began to decline and resulted in the majority of sugar factories in Java stopped operating. This started to happen due to new technology that is more efficient and the lack of direct intervention from the government. Most of the remaining factories have been abandoned and now only become empty factories, even some of them are gone. Jatibarang Sugar Factory which is located right in the city center of Jatibarang is a factory that has a long history and has an architectural heritage in the form of a roundhouse locomotive station, of which there are only two in Indonesia. As a small sugar-producing city in the past, the city of Jatibarang has variety of traditions that are influenced by sugar production. Through this research and design proposal, the author aims to examine how a factory area can be revitalized into a heritage that can accommodate public activities in society and as an object of tourism. Jatibarang Sugar Factory can be categorized as an industrial heritage, therefore the identification of valuable elements can be done by assessing its assets.
