Abstract

Internet as a tool of communication is commonly used in this rapid pace society that it has been integrated in our daily lives. The use of Internet greatly helps the likes of university students in their academic (assignments, reports, etc.) and entertainment area (chatting, browsing). The use of Internet excessively in previous studies has been found to be related to users who tend to be lonelier, adopt conduct problems, increased social isolation, impaired communication skills and are eight times more likely to have global emotional and psychosocial maladjustment (as cited in Kormas et al., 2011; Chou et al., 2005). In this study, the researcher has examined the difference of problematic Internet usage between high-scored emotional intelligence participants and low-scored participants in university students in Depok. Using Online Cognition Scale (OCS) to measure problematic Internet usage and Emotional Intelligence Quotient Inventory (EIQ) to measure emotional intelligence, the researcher measured 186 university students. The result suggested a significant difference between the two groups and indicated that participants with the low-scored emotional intelligence tend to score higher problematic Internet usage than participants with the high-scored emotional intelligence (t = 3.224, p < 0.05). The researcher also found significantvii differences in OCS dimensions: social comfort, loneliness/depression, and diminished impulse control and time of Internet usage duration.
