Abstract

When children are ill, they have a lot of thoughts and feelings in their hearts. Children have a need to express their thoughts, but they could not express their feelings and thoughts freely through words. They often need a media to express their feelings freely. The purpose of this study was to find out if drawing can be used as a communication media for children with cancer to express their feelings and to describe children’s feelings through their drawings. This was a qualitative study, using case study approach. In this case study, a child aged 12 with nasopharynx cancer was given the opportunity to express his feelings through drawings followed by a series of interviews. The drawings, interview results, and observation data were analyzed using thematic analysis by using literature and art therapy books. Themes emerging from this study included the child’s feelings of restriction, small, confusion, and being aware of the changes in his body image. It can be concluded that drawing can be used to express a child’s feelings. From the findings of the research, it is recommended for clinical settings to provide drawing tools to enable cancer children to express their feelings through drawing. It is also recommended for future research with similar topic to be conducted using a larger sample.
