Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of the Islamic revivalist groups in the practice of discourse related to Islamic gender equality in Indonesia. The aspects studied are the issue of wearing the hijab or purdah and the issue of polygamy. The use of constructivism theory through the hermeneutic method and analysis of critical discourse in this study analyzes the presence of revivalist groups in Indonesia which are part of transnational revivalist groups from Saudi Arabia and Egypt – Wahhabi and Muslim Brotherhood – can compound Islamic gender-equality discourse. This discourse from the revivalist groups were then answered by counter-discourse by moderate Islamic groups in Indonesia. The counter-discourse carried out by moderate Islamic groups is an effort to assist the government in implementing gender equality which has become a global interest. Thus, the social reality that is formed from a series of discourse practices related to Islamic gender equality in Indonesia is not present independently, but is inseparable from the established gender discourses. As such, the revivalists will no longer spread the totalitarian-centralistic ideologies in Indonesia. Finally, as the third biggest democratic and the biggest Muslim- majority country in the world, Indonesia is expected to fully participate in realizing global interests going forward.
