Abstract

Indonesia are known as the world highest coconut production in the world. Around 99% of coconut-producing areas are managed by smallholder farmers. Most of the cocofiber product are made into industrial raw materials such as doormats, rope and pots. The lack of innovation and couldn’t afford large-scale processing machines resulting less optimation of abundant raw material. With the title of the research called "Exploration of the use of coconut fiber coir for furniture design" with the limitation of the problem in the form of designing useful products from coconut fiber materials, using natural binders that is environmentally friendly and applied molding techniques as processing techniques. The purpose of this study is to educate the public about the beauty of our mother nature as outlined in handicraft products, as well as designing furniture products made from coconut fiber. The method that are used for this research start by collecting primary and secondary data through observation, interviews and detailed material exploration. The sources are taken from scientific journals, books and research related to the theme of this study. Based on the results of interviews, observations and exploration conducted it can be concluded that the coconut fiber material can be processed into furniture products. Using a white glue binder can produce a sturdy coconut fiber board. The use of latex glue produces a flexible structure so that it can be applied to making pads in furniture. The technique of processing fiber into a product is relatively simple and affordable so that it can be applied by coconut craftsmen.
