Abstract

Some theorists say that pictures have stronger meaning than other media to tell reality. Despite that fact, there are still just a few researches study about visual salience in news coverage. Visual framing is all about selecting and show particular photos wanted to be supporting the news. One of the factor that influence that process is the socio-culture background the media possesed. Aceh and Japan Tsunami as the well-known natural disasters in history will be an interesting sample to be reasearched in its news coverage photos. Kompas and Asahi Asia-Japan Watch (Asahi AJW) chosen by writer as the reasearch object because both of the media have different backgrounds. Moreover, with the reasearch object mentioned before, the writer reasearches the salience differences between the news coverage photos in both media. Writer also explains and analyzes the dominant-salience tendency and the way media covers dead-body in photos. The research is using content analysis as the method with quantitative approach. Coding sheet was being used as the research measuring tool. This reasearch studies 39 news coverage photos of Aceh Tsunami in Kompas, and 58 news coverage photos of Japan Tsunami in Asahi AJW. Based on the result, Kompas shows more live-saved frame with simpaty and emphaty emotion on its coverage. In addition, this Indonesian newspaper was also put some live-lost (dead body) frame. On the other hand, Asahi AJW conveys more pragmatic frame (construction damage) with fear or worriness as its dominant emotions. This Japan media online doesn’t have news coverage with political frame, live-lost frame, and disaster aid frame.
