Abstract

Identity crisis is commonly found during adolescence with inadequate self-understanding as its root. A case of identity crisis appeared during the writer’ teaching practicum. If identity crisis cannot be handled, it will lead to lack of self-improvement and be hardly function in the society. To handle this, adolescents need the foundation of identity, which is the understanding that humans are made in the image of God. This understanding will be interfered into belief that can be done through reflection. Therefore, through evident based research and literature review, this paper aims to discuss Christian teachers’ role to guide students overcoming identity crises through reflective exploration. The result of this paper shows that Christian teachers’ guidance through reflective exploration is beneficial because other than instilling the foundation of humans’ identity, they also guide students to enter an inner dialogue to refine understandings into a belief of oneself-identity. By refining the understanding that humans are made in the image of God and put it in their contextual identity, they will be able to glorify God. Thereafter, Christian teachers are recommended using reflective exploration repeatedly so that students gain deeper self-understanding. Also, further researchers are recommended assessing identity crises from other than psychosocial perspective.
