Abstract

The number of divorces in Indonesia has been increasing and this affects the children in the family, especially adolescents. Adolescence entails many changes and parental divorce is yet another setback they must bounce back from. Resilience has been found to play a big role in a child’s ability to adapt to changes due to parental divorce. It is therefore important to identify factors that can help build resilience. An individual’s attachment system determines responses to life stressors; therefore, this present study was conducted to analyse the effect of attachment on resilience in adolescents with divorced parents. Data was collected from 44 adolescents with divorced parents using the adapted versions of the Experiences in Close Relationships – Revised – General Short Form (ECR-R-GSF) and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). The results show that attachment anxiety predicts resilience while attachment avoidance was non-significant in predicting resilience. Further implications of these findings were outlined for future research in this field, and for parents, adolescents, counsellors, and readers in general.
