Abstract

This research is an attempt to describe the effect of peer teaching method as the English learning strategy in improving students’ ability to write formal report and making worry-free psychologically for students in writing their English composition at SMP Pelangi Kasih in North Jakarta. The research was descriptive quantitative and the tools used to collect data in the study were observation, questionnaire, pretest and posttest. Twenty-five students became the subject of this research. The inter-rater reliability of the pre-test is 0.54 which means both raters had no much difference in perception of scoring the writing pre-test. On another hand, the inter-rater reliability of the post-test is 0.84 which means both raters had much similar perception of scoring the writing post-test. The T-test result was 0.000 < 0.05 which means there was a difference between pre-test and post-test. N-Gain test result was 0.49 and this goes to the category of medium score which means there is improvement between before and after the treatment although it was not high significant statistically. Meanwhile, the result of N-Gain for the questionnaires is 0.055 which categorizes as low score. It means there was no significant change for students’ writing anxiety between before and after the treatment. The results of the research indicate there is a students’ progress in their formal report writing ability after carrying out the peer teaching strategy although this was not categorized as a high significant change. On another side, this learning strategy did not significantly effect on students’ anxiety in writing.
