Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji korelasi antara kemampuan membaca, kemampuan mendengarkan, dan kemampuan menulis dari 104 pembelajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing pada tingkat menengah. Dalam penelitian ini, data diperoleh melalui hasil dari practice test resmi untuk ujian Cambridge Preliminary English Test for Schools yang diterbitkan oleh UCLES. Ujian ini terdiri dari tes kemampuan membaca, tes kemampuan mendengarkan dan tes kemampuan menulis. Hasil dari tes tersebut digunakan untuk mendapatkan deskripsi umum mengenai kemampuan subjek penelitian dan juga untuk mengkaji korelasi antara keterampilan-keterampilan yang telah disebutkan di atas. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan membaca dan mendengarkan dari subjek penelitian berada pada tingkat yang sama, namun kemampuan menulis mereka berada pada tingkat yang lebih rendah. Selain itu, terdapat korelasi positif yang signifikan antara setiap pasang keterampilan yang diteliti. Hasil kaji korelasi juga menunjukkan bahwa korelasi yang paling kuat terdapat antara kemampuan membaca dan mendengarkan, sementara korelasi antara kemampuan membaca dan menulis menunjukkan hasil yang mirip dengan korelasi antara kemampuan mendengarkan dan menulis. / This study aims to examine the correlations between each pair of the reading, listening, and writing abilities of 104 intermediate learners of English as a foreign language. An official practice test of Cambridge Preliminary English Test for Schools published by the UCLES is used to collect the data. The instruments consist of a reading paper, a listening paper, and a writing paper. The results of the test are used to find the general descriptions of the results and the correlations among the aforementioned skills. The results reveal that the subjects’ reading and listening abilities are at a similar level but their writing ability is lower, and that there is a significant positive correlation between each pair of the skills researched. The results also show that the correlation between Reading and Listening is the strongest, while the correlation between Reading and Writing is similar to that between Listening and Writing.
