Abstract

Understanding content of the story and vocabulary capability are one of the aspects in the language development of the early childhood which can not be achieved by children in XYZ Day Care. Storytelling in XYZ Day Care has been conducted through animated video media and picture media. This research aims to find out the result of the usage of animated video media, the result of the usage of picture media, comparison of the result of between the animated video media and picture media in storytelling method to understand content of the story and vocabulary capability, as well as aspects of the story and media that have to be considered in the effort of language development of the early childhood in XYZ Day Care to be adjusted with their age level. This research uses qualitative method with case study approach. The data are collected from observation, interview and documentation. The researcher follows the guidance for qualitative data analysis technique by Miles and Huberman. Based on the research result it can be concluded that animated video media can be used as media to assist participants in understanding content of the story and vocabulary capability particularly for age category of above four years old; picture media can assist participants in all age categories in understanding content of the story and vocabulary capability; storytelling method in language development for vocabulary capability can be better obtained by participants through picture media rather than animated video media; and storytelling should consider the story aspects and media usage to be adjusted with the participant‟s age level since the participant‟s age level is closely related with the level of cognitive development in processing an information. / Pemahaman isi cerita dan penguasaan kosakata merupakan salah satu aspek perkembangan bahasa anak usia dini yang belum dapat dicapai oleh anakanak di Day Care XYZ. Penyampaian cerita di Day Care XYZ dilakukan melalui media video animasi dan media gambar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hasil penggunaan media video animasi, hasil penggunaan media gambar, perbandingan antara hasil penggunaan media video animasi dengan media gambar dalam memahami isi cerita dan penguasaan kosakata, serta aspekaspek cerita dan media yang perlu dipertimbangkan dalam upaya pengembangan bahasa anak usia dini di Day Care XYZ disesuaikan dengan tingkat usianya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Data diperoleh dari hasil observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Peneliti mengikuti panduan teknik analisis data kualitatif oleh Miles dan Huberman. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa media video animasi dapat digunakan sebagai media yang membantu partisipan untuk memahami isi cerita dan penguasaan kosakata khususnya untuk kategori usia lebih dari empat tahun; media gambar dapat membantu semua kategori usia partisipan dalam memahami isi cerita dan penguasaan kosakata, metode bercerita dalam pengembangan bahasa dengan tujuan penguasaan kosakata lebih banyak diperoleh partisipan melalui media gambar dibandingkan dengan media video animasi; dan dalam bercerita perlu dipertimbangkan aspek-aspek cerita dan media yang digunakan disesuaikan dengan tingkatan usia partisipan karena tingkatan usia partisipan berkaitan erat dengan tingkat perkembangan kognitif dalam memproses sebuah informasi.
