Abstract
This research discusses the films “Jagal” (International version title: “The Act of Killing,” 2012) and “Senyap” (International version title: “The look of Silence,” 2014), directed by Joshua Oppenheimer. They are both documentary films that try to reconstruct a 1965 mass murder which occurred in North Sumatra. In both films, many acts of violence were depicted or recreated. It was through the scenes of violence that the researcher noticed what had happened in the mass murder was not only caused by physical abuse. From the results of the research, the researcher found that there were three forms of violence contained in the film Jagal and Senyap, namely: physical, structural and cultural. All three forms showed that the meaning of violence in the film was not a single stand alone meaning, but rather an interplay between one another. The researcher uses Barthes’ semiotic theories in analyzing the violent scenes in both films. In addition, the researcher also uses Galtung’s triangle violence theory in understanding the meaning of violence itself. The paradigm is interpretive and the method of study is qualitative. / Penelitian ini berbicara mengenai film Jagal dan Senyap yang disutradarai oleh Joshua Oppenheimer. Dirilis pada tahun 2012 dan 2014, film Jagal dan Senyap adalah film documenter yang berupaya untuk merekostruksi pembunuhan massal yang terjadi pada tahun 1965 di Sumatera Utara. Dalam kedua film tersebut ada banyak adegan kekerasan yang digambarkan atau direka ulang. Dari adegan-adegan itulah penulis mengamati bahwa pembunuhan massal yang terjadi tidak disebabkan oleh kekerasan fisik semata. Dari hasil penelitian yang dilakukan, penulis menemukan adanya tiga bentuk kekerasan yang terdapat dalam film Jagal dan Senyap, yaitu: fisik, struktural dan kultural. Ketiga bentuk tersebut menunjukkan bahwa makna kekerasan dalam film tersebut tidak bersifat tunggal dan berdiri sendiri, melainkan saling mempengaruhi antara yang satu dengan yang lainnya. Penulis menggunakan teori semiotika Barthes dalam menganalisis adeganadegan kekerasan dalam kedua film tersebut. Selain itu, penulis juga menggunakan teori segitiga kekerasan Galtung dalam memahami makna kekerasan itu sendiri. Paradigma yang digunakan adalah interpretatif. Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif.
