Abstract

Fort Vastenburg is a historical remains dating back from the Dutch colonial era and was built in the 18th century. Its long and gloomy history resulted in the forming of an identity and memory that has a negative connotation to it, despite the fact that the history of the fort is just as important and had become a part of Surakarta City, in addition to its strategic location that’s gone idle due to abandonment. In order to respond to the growing problem as mentioned before, the goal of the design is to build a vessel of education which highlights the importance of the history and the identity of Fort Vastenburg, to try and mend its identity whilst changing the people’s perspective about the fort itself. The technique used to conduct the research is the single case study research method as well as the theory of the narrative structure, in which the successfulness of the design outcome of Fort Vastenburg Museum and Community Center will be studied through its background, data, and theories which had been gathered and reviewed, which was then distributed to several chosen interviewees with the purpose of receiving feedbacks about the success rate of the design according to them. Moreover, data gathering technique was also done primarily through site visits and direct interviews, as well as secondarily through literary and scientific sources, recordings, and documentations. After the research stage has been completed, it was then concluded that the design have successfully become a solution to the problem and the goal of the project, whereas the design of the museum can educate visitors more about the history of the fort that’s rarely known to the public, while the community center aims to educate visitors even more about the importance of history and the creative branch that could grow from the given topic.
