Abstract

Stanley Milgram was the first scientist that discovered the small-world phenomenon in 1967. At that time, he conducted an experiment using chain letters. From this experiment, Milgram concluded that every person in the world was separated by just six degrees of intermediaries. It is found that there were nodes, which often received the letters just one hop before the letters reached the target. Such persons are called hotspots. They have more connections than any other node in the network. Small-world phenomenon also has a strong relationship with the study of spread of emotions, diseases and also habits in social networks. In this research, we conduct small world experiment in University of Pelita Harapan. This experiment used questionnaires that are designed to achieve information about the spreading pattern of internet usage in the university students. This small world phenomenon was then related to number of friends in the Facebook account of the respondent. This research also tries to observe information about the spreading of internet usage trend in the university students. This experiment found that the average hop length to connect every node in the network is 3,3 with nine identified hotspots. It is also found that the increase of number of friends in Facebook account could indicate the increased probability of the information chain to reach the target. Additionally, it was found that the top three applications that are used by university students are Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter.
