Abstract

The movement for the protection of worker rights can be attributed to the late 20th century with the rise and increasing importance of Multinational Corporations (MNCs). During those periods, we saw an increase in worker rights abuses that continues until today and, consequently, the rise of human rights related activism. Even with the many numbers of international human rights frameworks and nongovernmental organizations aiming to eradicating labor abuses, it seems that it has been ineffective. This thesis contributes to the new method of worker rights protection which works in two ways, that is by changing the perspective towards workers as human assets instead of human resources, and by appealing to the financial benefits of doing so with the analysis on the financial performance of Adidas in 2012 and 2019. This research will be answering the question of how does MNCs typically protect their worker’s rights, how does Adidas themselves protect their workers in two different time periods, and how does the analysis of Adidas ties into the argument of workers as assets instead of resources. It applies the theory of Liberalism within the context of International Relations and the concepts of multinational corporations, human rights, and egoistic and or altruism. This thesis will be using a qualitative approach with historical-comparison research method. This thesis shows that there is severe mismanagement in the way MNCs protect their workers and it includes MNCs within the apparel industry, particularly Adidas. However, Adidas was able to better their worker protection policies and the benefits of doing so manifested in the better financial performance that Adidas experienced in 2019 compared to their financial performance in 2012. The betterment of their financial performance could then be attributed as the impact of Adidas viewing their workers as assets instead of resources.
