Abstract

Background: Cycling is often associated with erectile dysfunction, but until now the relationship between these two is still a question. The incidence and prevalence of ED in the world is quite high, Massachusetts Male Aging Study (MMAS) reports that the prevalence of ED is 52% in men aged 40-70 years and it is predicted to continue increasing, therefore ED should be given more attention to reduce the prevalence rate. Erectile dysfunction has an impact on one's self-confidence, which indirectly affects one's behavior or productivity. ED also affects a person's sexual satisfaction. Cycling has been studied to provide compression to the pudendal nerves and arteries leading to erectile dysfunction. Therefore, this study is expected to add information about the behavior in cycling that can be prevented to avoid an increase in cases of erectile dysfunction due to cycling. Objective: The purpose of this study is to know the relationship between behaviors in cycling to the incidence of erectile dysfunction in cyclists. Methods: This study utilized cross-sectional method towards 176 research subjects that fulfil the study criteria. Result: From 178 respondents, through bivariate analysis of Chi-Square shows that duration of cycling (p=0,042) and use of padded cycling short (p=<0,001) have significant relationship with the risk of erectile dysfunction in cyclist. Saddle position (Handle-bar height) (p=0,886) and type of saddle (p=0,768) do not show any significant relationship with the risk of erectile dysfunction in cyclist. Conclusion: duration of cycling and use of padded cycling short have significant relationship with the risk of erectile dysfunction in cyclist.
