Abstract

The researcher implemented project-based learning in Mariamoe Speaking Space, a growing English course in Manggarai-NTT. The researcher conducted the implementation of PjBL to assess the impact shown by students both in speaking skills and student engagement. The impact of PjBL in developing students’ speaking skills and engagement was seen as essential since those two aspects are the basics of a successful English environment. There were two research problems in this implementation: (1) To what extent does PjBL affect students’ speaking skills in Mariamoe Speaking Space? To what extent does PjBL affect student engagement in Mariamoe Speaking Space? In order to answer the two research questions, the researcher applied theory of Frederick, et al. (2004) on student engagement, Boss, et al. (2005) on PjBL and CEFR on speaking skill. This research used PTK research in which observation was used in conducting the research. Observation sheets filled by the researcher and an observer were the main instrument to collect the data needed. The researcher discovered two results; (1) The implementation of PjBL indicates positive improvement on students’ speaking skills at Mariamoe Speaking Space. This result was accumulated based on the mean of pre-action (3,76) and Cycle I (3,93) Cycle II (4,89). (2) The implementation of PjBL indicates positive improvement on student engagement in Mariamoe Speaking Space. Pre-Action (6,97) and Cycle I (9,0). The result of Cycle I has shown a significant improvement that the researcher decided to not focusing on this variable for Cycle II./ Penelitian ini mengimplementasikan project-based learning dalam di sebuah Lembaga kursus yang dikenal dengan Mariamoe Speaking Space di Manggarai, NTT. Peneliti mengimplementasikan project-based learning untuk mengukur pengaruh penerapan PjBL terhadap speaking skills dan student engagement. Hal ini dianggap penting untuk diketahui mengingat pentingnya kedua aspek ini dalam mewujudkan lingkungan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang sukses. Dalam penelitian ini, ada 2 masalah berbeda yang diangkat: (1) Bagaimana hasil penerapan PjBL dalam meningkatkan speaking skills siswa di Mariamoe Speaking Space? (2) Bagaimana hasil penerapan PjBL dalam meningkatkan student engagement di Mariamoe Speaking Space? Untuk menjawab dua permasalahan ini, peneliti menggunakan teori Frederick et al. (2004) dalam student engagement, Boss et al. (2005) dalam PjBL dan CEFR dalam speaking skill. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas yang manalembar observasi peneliti dan pengamat adalah instrumen utama dalam mendapatkan data. Peneliti menemukan 2 hasil pada penelitian tindakan kelas ini; (1) Implemetasi PjBL mengindikasikan hasil yang meningkat pada speaking skills siswa di Mariamoe Speaking Space. Hal ini diukur dari perubahan rata-rata akhir mulai dari pra-tindakan (3,76) dan Siklus I (3,93), Siklus II (4,89). (2) Implemetasi PjBL mengindikasikan hasil yang meningkat pada student engagement di Mariamoe Speaking Space. Hal ini diukur dari perubahan rata-rata akhir mulai dari pra-tindakan. (6,97) and Siklus I (9,0). Hasil Siklus I menunjukkan perkembangan yang bagus sehingga peneliti tidak focus pada variabel ini pada Siklus II.
