Abstract

Keywords: Insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, Universitas Pelita Harapan medical students / Background: Insomnia is a sleep disorder that is often found in young adults, especially those who are undergoing college. The most frequent impact of sleep disturbance is excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) which negatively impacts physiological, cognitive and quality of life aspects. Several previous studies have found inconsistent relationship between insomnia dan EDS. Furthermore, the study to measure the association between insomnia dan EDS have not been done before in medical students of University of Pelita Harapan (UPH) Research Objectives: To determine whether there is a relationship between insomnia and the incidence of EDS Hypothesis: There is an association between insomnia and symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness in UPH Medical students Research Methods: Research will be conducted using cross-sectional study and will be conducted from January 2021-May 2021. The number of samples needed is 68 preclinic students from the Faculty of Medicine UPH and screened using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data is collected using the Insomnia Severity Index(ISI) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale(ESS). The inclusion criteria are FK UPH preclinic students who were willing to take part in this research, while the exclusion criteria are students with Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA), BMI ≥30 kg/m2, consumed minimal 3 cups of coffee within 6 hours before bed, and have a history of use of sedative-hypnotic drugs, a history of narcolepsy, somnambulism and infection of the central nervous system. The results will be analyzed using SPSS program and Pearson correlation statistical test if the data distribution is normal and Spearman correlation if it isn’t.
