Abstract

Meaningful English teaching and learning should possess a high students’ engagement despite all circumstances that happened as in online learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This paper aims to dig deeper the main reasons for low students’ engagement and the practical ways of communicative approach addressing the issues alongside the uniqueness of Christian teachers on using communicative approach. The method used is qualitative descriptive and the data being discussed is taken from the writer’s online practicum portfolio. The results show the low students’ engagement, still happened because of the teacher centeredness, someone’s presence and influence, linguistic factors, and the low understanding of the LMS being used, and the internet connection issues. There are practical practices of using communicative approach such as interactive, collaborative, and supportive learning environment to cultivate the students’ engagement. The uniqueness of Christian teachers whenever using communicative approach relies on the Biblical engagement that is rooted in the application of essential questions that lead to the enduring understanding that is discussing the theological issues to bridge the students’ faith and the subject matter being learned.
