Abstract

Musical skill is crucial to be familiarized to early childhood students. This skill can be familiarized through music lesson in the early childhood program. However, the researcher is concerned about the level of students’ musical skill, learning motivation, and social skill that really need improvement. This triggers the researcher to conduct a Classroom Action Research (CAR) collaborated with the music teacher by implementing First Steps in Music method. The aims of this research are (1) Describing the implementation of First Steps in Music method that improves musical skill, learning motivation, and social skill. (2) Analyzing the development of students’ musical skill, learning motivation, and social skill after applying First Steps in Music method. (3) Describing the obstacles that occur during the application of the First Steps in Music method. This research is conducted in three cycles. The subject of this research is 17 students of Kindy 3. Data were collected through observation, notes, and practical test, as well as interview. Then the data were being analyzed in descriptive qualitative. The results showed that (1) all activities and corrective actions are carried out in accordance with the First Steps in Music in the next cycle. (2) there was a development of musical skill up to 71%, learning motivation up to 76%, and social skill up to 82%, and (3) the obstacles are the difference of student characteristics, teaching material, and games. / Keterampilan bermusik sangat penting diperkenalkan sejak anak usia dini. Salah satunya melalui proses pembelajaran seni musik di Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini (PAUD). Oleh karena itu, peran guru musik anak usia dini sangat penting sebagai fondasi untuk memperkenalkan dan meningkatkan keterampilan bermusik. Namun peran guru musik pada anak usia dini di tempat penelitian menimbulkan kerisauan peneliti. Adanya kerisauan peneliti sebagai berikut: rendahnya keterampilan bermusik dan motivasi belajar serta tidak menumbuhkan perkembangan keterampilan sosial pada anak-anak. Oleh karena itu, peneliti berkolaborasi dengan guru musik mengadakan tindakan perbaikan dengan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) melalui penerapan metode First Steps in Music. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) mendeskripsikan proses penerapan metode First Steps in Music yang dapat meningkatkan keterampilan bermusik, motivasi belajar, dan keterampilan sosial; (2) menganalisis perkembangan keterampilan bermusik, motivasi belajar, dan keterampilan sosial; (3) mengidentifikasi tantangan dihadapi selama penerapan metode First Steps in Music. PTK ini dilakukan dalam 3 siklus di kelas kindy 3 Sekolah Pelita Harapan Kemang Village Jakarta, dengan subyek 17 siswa. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, catatan lapangan, tes praktek, dan wawancara, serta dianalisis secara deskriptif-kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan: (1) tindakan perbaikan dilakukan sesuai dengan kegiatan-kegiatan First Steps in Music dengan penyempurnaan pada siklus berikutnya; (2) terjadi perkembangan keterampilan bermusik sampai 71%, motivasi belajar sampai 76%, dan keterampilan sosial sampai 82%; (3) tantangan yang dihadapi antara lain kesenjangan antara karakteristik siswa yang superaktif dengan pasif, dan pemilihan materi lagu serta permainan.
