Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore in what ways teachers can use mobile instant messaging (MIM) to improve students’ academic performance and investigate the impacts of using mobile instant messaging (MIM) on students’ academic performance. Mobile instant messaging (MIM) is a part of technological advancement that can be a useful tool to facilitate the learning process, especially in an online learning environment. Nowadays, it is important for teachers and educational stakeholders to be flexible and creative in designing an effective learning process in order to achieve the ultimate goal of education. The results of this research show that teacher can utilize mobile instant messaging (MIM) to provide guidance, follow up students, and remind the students. Moreover, there are some positive impacts of using mobile instant messaging for educational purposes which are the impact on the teacher-student relationship, students’ motivation, and participation in class, as well as the learning environment. This research used a descriptive qualitative method and literature review. For future research, the researcher recommends finding out how teacher can utilize mobile instant messaging in elementary school in online learning context to improve students’ academic performance. / Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengeksplorasi dengan cara apa guru dapat menggunakan pesan instan seluler (MIM) untuk meningkatkan kinerja akademik siswa dan menyelidiki dampak penggunaan pesan instan seluler (MIM) pada kinerja akademik siswa. Mobile instant messaging (MIM) merupakan bagian dari kemajuan teknologi yang dapat menjadi alat yang berguna untuk mempermudah proses pembelajaran, khususnya dalam lingkungan pembelajaran online. Saat ini, penting bagi guru dan pemangku kepentingan pendidikan untuk fleksibel dan kreatif dalam merancang proses pembelajaran yang efektif untuk mencapai tujuan akhir pendidikan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa guru dapat memanfaatkan mobile instant messaging (MIM) untuk memberikan bimbingan, menindaklanjuti siswa, dan mengingatkan siswa. Selain itu, ada beberapa dampak positif dari penggunaan mobile instant messaging untuk tujuan pendidikan yang berdampak pada hubungan guru-siswa, motivasi siswa, dan partisipasi di kelas, serta lingkungan belajar. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan studi pustaka. Untuk penelitian selanjutnya, peneliti merekomendasikan untuk mengetahui bagaimana guru dapat memanfaatkan mobile instant messaging di sekolah dasar dalam konteks pembelajaran online untuk meningkatkan kinerja akademik siswa.
