Abstract

Good competence of English grammar helps the language learners to use the language properly according to itsspecific rules. Based on observation, teaching sessions and the result of pre-test in grade VI of a Christian school in Kupang, the researcher found that the grade VI students have difficulties in understanding the grammar of simple present tense. The Grammar-Translation method was chosen to be implemented in order to improve students’ grammatical competence of simple present tense. Pelton’s model of Classroom Action Research was carried out in this research that started from September 25 until October 2, 2018. There were 24 students of grade VI participated in the research, but the researcher focused on 5 students who did not pass minimum standard criterion of 70 on pre-test. The data were collected using instruments such as lesson plan, mentor teacher and peer observation form, and test. The research findings and analysis made the researcher come into conclusion that the implementation of Grammar-Translation Method improves students grammar competence. It can be seen from the improvement of the students’ average score on post-test which is about 34,3 %. It can be concluded that Grammar-Translation Method improves grammatical competence of simple present tense of grade VI students in a Christian School in Kupang. / Kompetensi yang memadai dalam tatabahasa Inggris membantu pelajar bahasa untuk menggunakannya secara tepat sesuai dengan kaidahnya. Berdasarkan pengamatan, sesi mengajar, dan hasil dari pre-test kelas VI di salah satu sekolah Kristen di Kupang, peneliti menemukan bahwa siswa kelas VI tersebut kesulitan dalam memahami tatabahasa tentang simple present tense. Metode Grammar￾Translation dipilih untuk diterapkan dengan tujuan meningkatkan kompetensi tatabahasa simple present tense. Penelitian Tindakan Kelas model Pelton digunakan dalam penelitian ini yang dimulai dari tanggal 25 September hingga 2 Oktober 2018. Ada 24 siswa kelas VI yang ikutserta dalam penelitian ini, namun peneliti memfokuskan penelitian terhadap 5 siswa yang tidak mencapai kriteria ketuntasan minimal yaitu 70 pada pre-test. Pengumpulan data menggunakan instrument seperti rencana pelaksanaan pembelajaran, lembar observasi guru mentor dan teman sejawat, dan tes. Dari hasil temuan dan analisis penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan metode Grammar-Translation meningkatkan kemampuan tatabahasa siswa. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari peningkatan nilai rata-rata siswa pada post-test yaitu sekitar 34,3%. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa metode Grammar-Translation meningkatkan kemampuan tatabahasa simple present tense dari siswa kelas VI di salah satu sekolah Kristen di Kupang.
