Abstract

Students’ behavioral engagement during learning activity is a crucial thing which can bring the students to a good academic achievement. Without behavioral engagement, the students might miss some important thing in the learning and could not achieve their best result. In fact, the researcher found that grade 1 students at one of Christian Schools in Tangerang showed low behavioral engagement toward English class especially in writing and reading. In English class, students tend to interrupt the teacher, played with their friends during learning, did not pay attention and did not follow class procedure. The researcher decided to do a research in this class by implementing Running Dictation to enhance their behavioral engagement. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) method by Pelton. The subject of this research was 18 grade 1 students. The research started from September 6, 2018 to October 17, 2018. The researcher used lesson plan and mentor feedback, mentor anecdotal note, and reflection journal to see that all steps of Running Dictation have been implemented. Questionnaire, peer and mentor checklist observation used to see how many criteria of behavioral engagement fulfilled by the students. The result pattern from the analysis of the questionnaire, peer and mentor checklist observation showed that the number of criteria of behavioral engagement fulfilled by the students enhanced from the first to the second implementation. It was after an organized implementation of Running Dictation by following six steps.
