Abstract

Reading comprehension is a critical ability needed by every student. It helps them to gain knowledge and enriches students’ understanding. However, to be able to comprehend a reading text fully is difficult, just as some students at one high school in Nias struggle to understand reading texts in English lesson. The researcher decided to implement Pre-reading Strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension and analyze how Pre-reading Strategy affects it. Classroom Action Research (CAR) as modeled by Pelton is used for this research method. The research was conducted in class XI MIA having 27 students consisting 13 boys and 14 girls. It was conducted from August 24 – October 13, 2018. The data for this research is collected by using test, mentor’s feedback, observation form, reflection journal, and lesson plan. The data then is analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The result of this research shows that Pre-reading Strategy improves students’ reading comprehension. At the end of the implementation, 56% students met the indicators of good reading comprehension from 26% in the beginning, and only 7% students at the end who have not met the indicators from 30% in the beginning. The procedures of Pre-reading Strategy that has been implemented effectively could improve students’ reading comprehension./ Kemampuan memahami bacaan adalah sebuah kemampuan penting yang dibutuhkan oleh setiap siswa. Kemampuan itu menolong mereka untuk memeroleh pengetahuan dan dapat memperkaya pemahaman siswa. Namun, untuk dapat memahami sebuah teks bacaan dengan utuh dan benar itu sulit, sebagaimana beberapa siswa pada sebuah sekolah di Nias bergumul untuk memahami teks bacaan dalam pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Peneliti memutuskan untuk mengimplementasikan Pre-reading Strategy untuk meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa dan menganalisa bagaimana Pre-reading Strategy memengaruhinya. Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang dimodelkan oleh Pelton digunakan dalam metode penelitian ini. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan kepada kelas XI MIA yang berjumlah 27 siswa terdiri dari 13 laki-laki dan 14 perempuan. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dari 24 Agustus – 13 Oktober 2018. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dengan menggunakan tes, umpan balik mentor, form observasi, jurnal refleksi, dan rencana pelaksanaan pembelajaran. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisa menggunakan analisis deskriptif. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Pre-reading Strategy meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Pada akhir pengimplementasian, 56% siswa memenuhi indikator pemahaman membaca yang baik dari 26% pada mulanya, dan hanya 7% siswa yang di akhir belum memenuhi indikator dari 30% pada mula-mula. Prosedur Pre-reading Strategy yang telah diimplementasikan secara efektif dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa.
