Abstract

Student behavioral engagement is significant in a learning process because it has impact in students’ academic achievement. Christian education aims to facilitate students to know God and His will as well as submit to Him. However, what researcher found during teaching experience at a primary school in Lippo Village that some students were behaviorally disengage in learning certain subject. Thus, the researcher implements Activity-Based Learning. To collect the data, researcher uses qualitative descriptive method. The data are lesson plan, mentor’s feedback, and observation reflection as the main data. The research aims to answer these questions, i.e., 1) what are the basic principles to implement Activity-Based Learning method in the classroom? and 2). to what extent does the Activity-Based Learning method enhance student’s behavioral engagement? The results show that Activity-Based learning consists of some principles such as full clear instruction, full of challenge, involving the whole aspect of students (thinking, feeling, moving). Besides, some students are behaviorally engaged in learning when the teacher implements Activity-Based Learning. The conclusion is Activity-Based Learning enhances students’ engagement in class. For the future researchers, the recommendation is conducting the questionnaire or survey before and after implementing Activity-Based Learning to get the more accurate result./Keterlibatan siswa (Students behavioral engagement) merupakan suatu hal yang penting dalam sebuah proses pembelajaran, sebab hal tersebut sangat menentukan pencapaian siswa dalam belajar. Selain itu, proses belajar merupakan hal krusial dalam kehidupan setiap orang. Dalam sudut pandang kekristenan, belajar adalah sebuah sarana bagi seseorang untuk dapat mengenal Tuhan dan kehendakNya bagi dunia yang mana pada akhirnya akan membuat setiap orang tunduk kepada Allah (Ini merupakan tujuan dari Pendidikan Kristen). Namun, berdasarkan pengamatan selama masa Praktik Lapangan di salah satu sekolah di Lippo Village, peneliti menemukan murid-murid mengalami behavioral disengage saat belajar. Oleh sebab itu, penulis mengimplementasikan metode pembelajaran Activity-Based Learning selama 6 kali mengajar. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif deskripif untuk mengumpulkan data. Data yang dimaksud adalah: lesson plans, mentor’s feedbacks, dan observation reflections. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menjawab rumusan masalah berikut: 1). apa saja prinsip dalam menerapkan metode Activity-Based Learning di dalam kelas? 2). sejauh apakah metode Activity-Based Learning dalam meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa di dalam kelas? Pada akhirnya, berdasarkan hasil dari data yang dikumpulkan, prinsip dasar implementasi Activity-Based Learning di dalam kelas adalah adanya instruksi yang jelas, adanya tantangan serta melibatkan seluruh aspek dalam diri siswa (berpikir, merasakan, dan melakukan pergerakan). Saran dari peneliti untuk sekolah, dalam mengimplementasikan Activity-Based Learning sebaiknya guru memberikan instruksi yang jelas kepada siswa karena hal tersebut akan mempengaruhi siswa dalam melakukan kegiatan yang diberikan oleh guru. Selanjutnya, untuk penelitian selanjutnya peneliti menyarankan agar di edarkan kuesioner kepada siswa sebelum dan setelah pelaksanaan Activity-Based Learning agar hasil yang diperoleh lebih akurat.
