Abstract

Tipografi dalam lingkup Desain Komunikasi Visual umumnya dipahami sebagai medium berupa kumpulan karakter atau huruf yang dikomposisikan sedemikian rupa untuk menyampaikan pesan (Landa, 2014, 44). Pesan yang disampaikan tidak hanya bersifat informatif, dimana hanya diposisikan sebatas instrumen (sebagai susunan kata) yang berfungsi untuk menjelaskan medium komunikasi visual lainnya seperti ilustrasi atau fotografi. Tipografi juga dapat dipahami lebih dari sekedar susunan teks penjelas gambar (baik secara ilustratif atau fotografis). Ia dapat tampil sebagai visual yang dramatis dan ekspresif. Sebagaimana dikatakan oleh Rob Carter, anatomi dari bentuk tipografis dapat dieksplorasi lebih jauh dengan tujuan mencapai wujud yang lebih ekspresif (Carter 1997, 24). Potensi dari tipografi sebagai medium komunikasi visual yang ekspresif inilah yang akan dieksplorasi dalam proyek akhir kali ini. Pendekatan eksploratif ini diterapkan untuk menantang kembali pendekatan tradisional dalam tipografi yang instrumental dan fungsional. Pengolahan bentuk, ruang, tekstur, dan warna dalam tipografi dieksplorasi untuk menantang pemahaman tradisional tersebut. Eksplorasi tipografis semacam ini biasanya masuk ke dalam tajuk tipografi eksperimental. Upaya eksperimental ini akan diterapkan dengan menempatkan lagu sebagai konten yang hendak dikomunikasikan. Lagu yang dimaksudkan adalah kumpulan lagu dalam album Sinestesia dari grup Efek Rumah Kaca. Perancangan ulang tampilan visual dari album Sinestesia oleh Efek Rumah Kaca tersebut akan menjadi luaran dari proyek akhir ini. Beberapa metode akan diterapkan untuk mencapai hal ini. Pertama, teori Semiotika dari Charles Sanders Peirce akan ditempatkan sebagai metode untuk menganalisis lirik lagu. Kedua, pendekatan metodologis untuk menganalisis musiknya akan mengacu ke pandangan Frank Armstrong dalam Hearing Type yang menunjukkan relasi analogus antara musik dan tipografi. Ketiga, pengolahan bentuk tipografis secara eksperimental dari Filippo Tommaso Marinetti dan David Carson akan ditempatkan referensi utama bagi eksplorasi visual. Terakhir, untuk langkah-langkah praktis dari proses perancangannya sendiri akan merujuk ke metode perancangan dari Robin Landa./ Typography in graphics design is defined as a medium cognate a collection of characters or letters composed in certain way to convey a message (Landa, 2014, 44) The message is not only conveyed informatively, where it is positioned as an instrument (words) that serves to explain other visual communication mediums such as illustration or photography. Typography can also be understood as more than just an arrangement of text explaining images (either illustratively or photographically). It can appear as a dramatic and expressive. Retrieved from Rob Carter's opinion, the anatomy of typographical form can be explored further with the aim of achieving more expressive form (Carter 1997, 24). The potential of typography as an expressive visual communication medium will be explored in this final project. This exploration is to challenge the traditional approach in typography that is instrumental and functional. Visual exploration of form, space, texture, and color in typography is explored to challenge these traditional understandings. Based on the context, this typography experimental project will be placing the song as the content to be communicated. The designer will redesign a collection of songs in the Sinestesia album from Efek Rumah Kaca group. The redesign of the album packaging of Sinestesia album will be the output of this final project. Several methods will be implemented to achieve this. First, the theory of Semiotics from Charles Sanders Peirce will be a method for analyzing song lyrics. Second, the methodological approach to analyzing the music will refer to Frank Armstrong's views in Hearing Type which shows an analogous relationship between music and typography. Third, the experimental processing of typographic forms from Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and David Carson will be the main reference for visual exploration.
