Abstract

Gender equality refers to the equal rights, opportunities, treatment and valuation of women and men in employment. At present more females are occupying positions of leadership in society, including the field of education as a principal. This was the phenomenon that the researcher found in XYZ School, where the principal is a woman. This research specifically aims to discuss and discribe the leadership style of elementary principal in XYZ School and the teachers’ perceptions about leadership style of the elementary principal. The researcher used qualitative descriptive method in this research. The main subject in this research was the elementary principal in XYZ School. The research was held from Monday, 2nd of November 2015 to Wednesday, 25th of November 2015 (24 days). The data gathered from the observation checklist, interviews, and teachers’ questionnaire. The result of this research indicates that the XYZ principal applied democratic and transformational leadership style. The XYZ principal is being democratic since she uses a transparent process for making decisions, shares power to the followers if appropriate and every teachers could share their values and knowledge to enhance every group members’ potential or skills. As a female leader, the principal was attentive or sensitive to the feeling of her followers. The XYZ principal is also being a transformational leader through 4 factors: Idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Teachers confirmed the findings that the principal is democratic and transformational./ Kesetaraan gender mengacu pada persamaan hak, kesempatan, perlakuan dan penilaian perempuan serta laki-laki dalam pekerjaan. Hari-hari ini semakin banyak perempuan menduduki posisi kepemimpinan dalam masyarakat termasuk dalam bidang pendidikan sebagai seorang kepala sekolah. Ini adalah fenomena yang peneliti temukan di sekolah XYZ, yang kepala sekolahnya adalah seorang wanita. Penelitian ini secara khusus bertujuan untuk menggambarkan gaya kepala SD dalam menerapkan kepemimpinan perempuan dan transformasional di SD XYZ, dan juga untuk membahas dan menjelaskan persepsi guru tentang gaya kepemimpinan kepala sekolah. Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dalam penelitian ini. Subjek utama dalam penelitian ini adalah kepala SD di XYZ. Penelitian ini diadakan dari Senin, 2 November 2015 sampai dengan Rabu, 25 November 2015 (24 hari).Data dikumpulkan dari pengamatan, wawancara mendalam, dan kuesioner guru. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kepala sekolah XYZ menerapkan gaya kepemimpinan demokratis dan transformasional. Kepala Sekolah XYZ menjadi demokratis karena dia menggunakan proses yang transparan dalam membuat keputusan, membagikan kekuasaan kepada pengikut pada saat yang tepat dan setiap guru dapat berbagi nilai-nilai serta pengetahuan mereka untuk meningkatkan keterampilan atau potensial setiap anggota kelompok. Sebagai pemimpin wanita, kepala sekolah sangat perhatian atau sensitif terhadap perasaan pengikutnya. Kepala Sekolah XYZ juga menjadi pemimpin transformasional melalui 4 faktor: Menjadi pengaruh ideal, inspirasional motivasi, stimulasi intelektual, dan pertimbangan individual. Para guru mengkonfirmasi temuan bahwa kepala sekolah demokratis dan transformasional.
