Abstract

Dyslipidemia is the most common risk factor for stroke and abnormal lipid metabolism is closely related to stroke recurrence. Therefore, knowledge of stroke risk factors, especially dyslipidemia in the community is important in efforts to prevent recurrent strokes in the future. Aim: To determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes and behavior of stroke patients towards dyslipidemia as a risk factor for stroke. Hypothesis: There is a relationship between knowledge and attitudes and behavior of stroke patients towards dyslipidemia as a risk factor for stroke. Methods: The design of this study was unpaired categorical comparative analysis with cross sectional method using primary data from interviews with research subjects. Result: Of the 220 respondents involved in this study, it was found that 151 respondents (68.6%) had good knowledge about stroke. Meanwhile, 111 respondents (50.5%) had poor knowledge about dyslipidemia. Based on the chi-square analysis, there was a significant relationship between knowledge about dyslipidemia and the attitude of stroke patients at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village Building B towards dyslipidemia as a risk factor for stroke (OR) 40,000 (95% CI 5,343-299,454; p-value <0,001). Significant results were also found in the relationship between knowledge about dyslipidemia and the behavior of stroke patients at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village Building B towards dyslipidemia as a risk factor for stroke (OR) 21.956 (95% CI 8.311- 58.003); p-value <0.001). Conclusion: Most of the respondents have a good level of knowledge about stroke, but not so with dyslipidemia. Respondents' poor knowledge about dyslipidemia is a risk factor for bad attitudes and behavior towards dyslipidemia. Therefore, it is important to increase public awareness and health workers about the importance of education and outreach about dyslipidemia in the community so that they can prevent strokes in the future.
