Abstract

Students’ engagement is a crucial factor for the effectiveness of language learning. When students lack engagement in the classroom, their opportunities to practice and receive feedback are reduced and it will negatively affect their language skill improvement and learning outcome. However, during the second practicum in a Christian private school in South Tangerang, it was observed that junior high school students had low engagement during English lessons. They showed little interest in English, did not pay attention, and lacked initiative to interact. To address this issue, the writer implemented Experiential Learning (EL), which led to the aims of this paper: to explain whether EL enhances students’ engagement and how to implement EL in English lessons. Therefore, this paper used qualitative research based on literature review and data from the second field practicum to elaborate on its aims. After implementing EL for three weeks, it was found that students' holistic engagement was enhanced. This was proven in their learning outcomes, motivation, collaboration, active participation, and interaction. Based on the findings and conclusion, two recommendation were suggested. First, for future researcher to examine the long-term effects of implementing EL on students' engagement. Second, for teachers to implement EL with involvement of technology in English lesson.
