Abstract

The transition from high school to college requires first-year students to adapt to the academic, personal, social and emotional context of college. However, adaptation difficulties tend to be experienced by these students. One of the things that affects the adaptation of first-year students is the ability of individuals to maintain a clear self-awareness and be able to maintain their own thoughts, feelings and behavior in the demands or pressures of the situation, also known as selfdifferentiation. This study aims to look at the contribution of self-differentiation to the adaptation of first-year students at Pelita Harapan University. Participants consisted of 174 first-year students. This study used a correlational design with multiple linear regression analysis. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant contribution given by self-differentiation as a whole to student adaptation. The dimensions of maintaining identity, emotional distancing and relational sensitivity contribute significantly to students' college adaptation.
