Abstract

SLB ABCD Sejahtera Bogor is a school with special education for blind, deaf, mentally challenged and physically disabled children. This school already has several special facilities for children with special needs, but these spaces do not meet the safety and comfort of the students. Students need to practice the deficiencies or disabilities they have for their survival. This school also has another issue, namely the lack of social interaction between students with different disabilities. Based on these two issues, an inclusive activity space was designed at the school which functions to accommodate the adaptive activities needed by students with special needs and to stimulate social interaction between students with different types of disabilities. The design of this inclusive activity space utilizes universal design principles and strategies, which is a design concept that takes into account the special space needs of people with disabilities by prioritizing their security, comfort and safety in using the space. This design implements the criteria for activity spaces other than study rooms, including therapy rooms for each disability, music room, sensory garden, common area, cafeteria and sports area by accommodating the needs of each disability characteristic. This design also produces a design that can stimulate social interaction between people with disabilities in common areas and cafeterias using the universal design principles of equitable use, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and size and space for approach.
