Abstract

Dengue infection has become a dangerous disease for Indonesian people. There are around more than 90,000 cases in 2020 and the average infects children under 15 years. According to WHO, dengue infection has three classifications, dengue with or without warning signs and severe dengue. Patients affected by dengue infection can experience disturbances in the body's electrolyte balance and according to previous research, Hyponatremia is the most common case. Hyponatremia is a condition in which the sodium level in the blood is less than 135 mEq/L. Hyponatremia has several dangerous complications, namely rhabdomyolysis, disturbed mental status, seizures, and coma. Research Objectives: To determine whether there is a relationship between dengue infection and the severity of hyponatremia in pediatric patients who are hospitalized at the Balaraja Regional General Hospital. Research Methods: This study employed a retrospective cross-sectional design and a non-probability purpose-fixed disease sampling technique on 71 medical records of pediatric patients with dengue infection at Balaraja Regional General Hospital that met the research criteria. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: From the analysis of 71 data, it was found that there was no significant relationship between the severity of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and the occurrence of hyponatremia (P > 0.05, OR = 0,033, RR = 0.991 – 9.083). Conclusion: The research results indicate that there is no significant relationship between the severity of DHF and the severity of hyponatremia in pediatric patients with dengue infection at Balaraja Regional General Hospital in 2022. Keyword: Severity of DHF, Dengue infection, Severity of hyponatremia.
